Shirin Neshat: Artist of the Decade
by G. Roger Denson of The Huffington Post
The New York Times
“Surpasses even Michael Haneke’s WHITE RIBBON in the fierce beauty and precision of its cinematography.” – Stephen Holden
Entertainment Weekly
B+ “Neshat’s love for interactive video installations and abiding interest in Islamic feminine identity are evident in her dreamy first feature”
Variety
“the much-anticipated pic has striking moments comparable to the best of Neshat’s potent imagery…”
The Village Voice
“Stellar acting… Gorgeously composed and shot images.” -Ernest Hardy
guardian.co.uk
“Neshat has directed a quietly tremendous film which ensnares both the heart and the mind.” -Peter Bradshaw
boston.com
“WOMEN WITHOUT MEN features crystalline shot compositions that seem to rise out of an alternately troubled and serene dreamscape.” -Ty Burr
Film Threat
“Neshat seems born to make movies. Every shot in the film is gorgeously framed and highly expressive.” -David Finkelstein
Slant
“Compelling… Heartbreaking and thrilling.” -Ed Gonzalez
Boxoffice Magazine
“powerful and provacative” -Wade Major
The Hollywood Reporter
“Bottom Line: Eloquent film illuminates Iranian history from a female point of view.”

“…you have a feature film that’s a must-see in the international festival and art-house circuit”
London Times
“This beautifully shot film, set in Tehran during the period leading up to the 1953 coup which toppled the democratically elected government, is a quiet and understated look at the lives of four very different women’s struggle for freedom.”
Toronto – Exclaim
“Quite literally, Women Without Men is a beautiful film to watch.”
Tehran Review
“The aspiration of Neshat’s Gesamtkunstwerk is to transcend its time specificity, and in doing so do justice to the sovereignty of art. In the case of WOMEN WITHOUT MEN, a tragic interpretation reveals how the interests of art and politics are reconciled.”
The New York Review of Books
“Visually the scene has magic in it—a quiet dense with the work of nature, a paradise saturated with the energy of life, cycling toward death and back again.”
Ladies Film Club
“This is the power for change in Iran. Maybe a lesson, a way of life we will one day assume as our own. WOMEN WITHOUT MEN is a beautiful informative entertaining film that will live on as one of the pivotal moments in film”
Levantine Center
“Using allegory, repetition, imagery, and metaphor, the film is a masterpiece of narrative poetry. Often its images are unforgettable.”
News Blaze
“melancholy, poetically and passionately crafted and never less than visually enchanting”

I’m a big follower of world cinema & have high regard for films from Iran.
I’m also a part of a alternative film movement called VIKALP
I came across the web-site to your film… & also followed the videos on youtube.
The film looks hard-hitting, eloquent & evocative…
Would want to see & share ‘Women Without Men’ with the art-house audience here in Bombay, India. Where can I buy the DVD from ? Please kindly let me know.
Would also like to more about Shirin…

Excellent post. I was checking continuously this blog and I’m impressed! Very useful info particularly the last part
I care for such info much. I was looking for this certain information for a long time. Thank you and good luck.
I never understood why women in Iran let themselves be suppressed so badly to point that they are blind to the world. I am glad that, as the movie educates, there are women who are actually doing something for themselves and taking a stand against the disgusting men who take arms to push women down. Honestly – and you wonder why these women don’t hate those men? I would love a take arms and shoot at them. I really hope this movie educates women to think and be independent.
